Are woodworking tools expensive?
Are woodworking tools expensive? I found out today that everything is relative.
I am waiting for my Tax refund so I can get a Grizzly saw that is about $1700.00 plus shipping and another $120.00 or so for a truck with a power lift.
Well, I found out today that saw is really inexpensive for what you get.
My trusty very old vacuum cleaner went up in sparks and flame… Well, alot of sparks, and some flame that quickly went out. Maybe just some dog hair burning?
I browsed the web for a good quality vacuum to replace my old one. DAMN! I had no idea they cost that much!
Good quality vacuum with Tax runs about half the cost (take a few hundred) of the saw I want.
I guess this experience keeps things in perspective? Maybe no Saw… Gee… And no smell of new cast-iron in that vacuum!

I have been told that woodworking is much less expensive than a mistress.
Would that be with - or without - the cost of the divorce attorney?

My wife long ago past on, was the Perfect Wonan.. She put up with me and we were still friends!

My wife is all I wanted or ever needed. She died long ago. And I hope She still wants me!
Love it! great comment. also less expensive than the folks who spend thousands (tens even!) on golf memberships and boats!
My carpet guy recommended this one

His wife cleans houses and wore out an Orek so she got the Dyson.
I am currently using my Fein with the Fein power head which I am happy with but wish the connection of the hose/handle to the wand was a click joint. I have to use a wrap of elec. tape to keep it stuck on.
Hey I have ordered a few tools trucked to my cultisac/driveway and requested a truck with a lift gate (probably was going to send it any way ) and it did not cost extra. Once on the ground the machine was already on a fork dolly and they drug it down the drive way no prob.
Shop around. This was Amazon for a big old Delta drill press and Laguna for my bandsaw.
I think the shipping was free in at least one case if not both though I realize a lot has changed since then.
Good shopping !

Thank God, I had some long heavy boards and I was feelin' good that day. It sat out in the driveway till the next morning till I recovered. NO.. the driver would not help me!
And I had no fear that one person would drive off with it in a pickp truck. Maybe some pros could! with a 3/4 ton....
> Ever try to get off the back of a truck alone?<Sure; just open the back door/put the gate down, drive backwards about fifty, and slam on the brakes ! Best to land it in the neighbor's juniper bushes if ya can.No probrocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Abraham Lincoln ( 54° shaves )

Have you ever compared the cost of woodworking to fly fishing? Holy Cow! Take a look at the price of a good fly rod. Pound for pound, woodworking costs next to nothing. I'm looking at a TS for the new shop and I figure it's going to run somewhere around $3.50 per pound. I've got fly rods that cost me close to $3,200 per pound!! Thats nearly 1,000 times as much.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I think I'm going to use that argument on my better half -- who let me buy all those fly rods -- if she argues about the cost of the TS. Ha!

WilG,
Even to ask a question such as, "Are woodworking tools expensive?" sets a dangerous train of thought in motion around a ladywife's wetware. The very concept should be verboten as the wimmin will start to do odious comparisons between the cost of one large plane or Domino and that for a quantity of frocks. There are exceptions - FG, Maddy, Wanda and others will calculate properly and come to The Right Answer.
But the majority of ladee-wimmin are biased in such calculations and the equation will not favour the lovely tool. Soon they will also want your shed for a new wardrobe and shoe warehouse......
Lataxe, who has conned (I mean reasoned logically with) the ladywife for years on this subject.
I would bet you listen to your ladywife's more than anybody!
A Good thing.. She loves you!
My fair Cheshire born bride is a quilter AND a photographer. Since introducing me to names such as Husqvarna and Bernini, plus Canon and Nikon (with "SLR" in front of the model numbers), she hasn't flinched a bit when I've mentioned woodworking tools.
I second the Dyson vacum..
I have a dog who sheds pounds of hair per week.. I mean you could knit sweaters from him..
he ruined every single vacum we had tried up to the Dyson..
I have found over the years that a good tool usually pays for itself within a few projects provided you actually do the projects.I have bought several new tools in the past few years and hope to buy at least one major purchase in the near future. But I have saved more that the cost of all the tools put together on the cost of the furniture I have built in that time.Woodworking is definitely less expensive than golf or drinking, plus you have something to show for the money when you are done. And hopefully, my kids will tell their children and grandchildren that their long gone great granddad made that and hopefully will like it and remember me a little. Domer
The only tool that is expensive, is the one that you bought, and do not use.
Much better than skiing or cocaine.
