Hey all,
My wife found this chest in a antique shop in Charleston, SC a few months back, now she has tasked me with building her a copy. Construction looks pretty simple, but I’m having trouble finding hardware similar to closing mechanism on the front of this piece.
Has anyone seen anything close to this style of hardware for sale anywhere… doesn;t have to be exact, just in the ballpark, I think just something with a large round plate would suffice…
Any ideas?

That is a honey!! I think that may be a European piece and you may have to haunt some flea markets (BIG ones like multi-day with many dealers). Where are you located--in SC? You might be able to have it fabricated. I think that might be your best option.
Lee Valley sells some that are the same basic idea, although in their case the backplates are pierced:

I haven't bought anything here but they have what you want.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I did a lot of research on tansu hardware earlier this year. Lee Valley was the least expensive. Many were well over $100 for the piece you want.
Wow thanks for the links... I think many of these would work.... and sorry not in SC, my brother-in-law lives in Charleston so we visit often.. I thought of making it myself but not sure if I could get the right patina on the metal
I didn't think to look for chinese hardware... I was thinking french... go figure... anyhow, found this site, they seem to have exactly what I'm looking for, thanks for the great leads... never would have found it on my own.http://www.chinesebrasshardware.com/Items/pab-0248?&caSKU=pab-0248&caTitle=Classic%20Round%20Brass%20Cabinet%20Face%20Plate
Yeah, definitely Asian. If you look at those doors carefully, you'll discover that they are hanging on a top and bottom pivot that is actually the stile.
There are a lot of these things that are being sold in antique stores, but are not really antiques--merely mass-produced reproductions. They're nice. Just don't pay more than they're worth.
I hear ya, I've been in the store it was in before... they have very few actual antiques. I guess it all comes down to your finishing technique.
I am glad you found the hardware. I think if I saw it in the "flesh" I might have said oriental, not European, but I do like the "look". Have fun.Gretchen
Take a look at this website, I believe there are several items that are very close, a little more ornate but certainly within the design range: Item pAB-0248, Item pAA-0063, Item pAA-0063A, Item pAB-0177
