Alternatives for glass shelf support?
5mm or 1/4″ pin support holes are fine inside a cabinet.
I need to provide for adjustable glass shelf support in a highly visible, two-sided built-in that has no doors (open both sides).
Is anyone familiar with an ‘upgraded’ means of edge support that is adjustable and better-looking than pin holes?
This – http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=1203 is sort of the idea, but in this case I’m not crazy about brown plastic standards.
This seems a lot classier for a highly visible area – http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10603 (but OUCH! $$$)
TIA

Have you looked at Lee Valley? They have a number of different types of shelf pins. If you want to make the type that Rockler carries you could buy brass bar and drill the five millimeter holes yourself. I'm not sure you would save much over buying them if you only had a small quantity you needed.
I've also machined my own by using a stainless bar 3/16 X 3/4 then routing a grove in the cabinet at 1 inch intervals.

You could kerf the sides of the enclosure. The shelves slide into the kerfs. If you're using plywood, so you can't kerf it, attach cleats to the faces. If the kerfs or cleats are closely-spaced, they look more like a decorative feature than a shelf-support system.
Here's an adjustable-shelf approach which was common in the Arts&Crafts era. The light blue parts are fixed to the cabinet. The dark-blue parts are loose. The homeowner places them in the sawtooths where the shelves are to go. The shelves sit on top of those cleats. Generally the ends of the shelves fit between the sawtooth standards, so that the shelves can't be pulled straight out of the cabinet. The A&C folks used wood shelves, but you could use glass.
Interesting ideas - thanks!

An easier way to follow Jamie's tip is to place two lengths of support stock about two inches wide one on top of the other and then drill press a series of, say, one inch holes at two inch centres down the centre line. Band saw both together down the centre line and you have matching supports for a cabinet.
Of course the cross supports will need semi circular ends.
Almost invisable support for a glass shelf?? SO hard to do!
I groove (Not adjustable) that fits the glass thickness.. Some rubber glue to hold it there!
Am I missing something? OK.. so I missed adjustabe.. ALOT of grooves?

You're right - it isn't easy to do.
