Air Powered Sanding System:
I seem to be developing an allergy to wood dust. I understand the air powered sanders reduce dust, significantly. I do NOT have, and cannot seem to find anything other than very short articles in woodworking magazines that give me any details.
Has anyone used the Abranet system (vacuum)? Tell me about it.
Has anyone used the Dynabrade system (vacuum)? Tell me about it.
Has ANYONE used both–can you compare them for me.
I have a 4 hp 12 gal compressor. Will it run one? I don’t have a problem waiting for a minute or two for the compressor to catch up–but, I don’t want to wait 15 minutes.
Finally: Can you use Abranet successfully on the Dynabrade system? Seems like the Dynabrade is less expensive, but I don’t want to spend $200 to find out I would have been happier spending $300
Thanks

Abranet is an abrasive and can be used on anyone's vacuum sander if you change the pad.
Air sanders aren't necessarily any more efficient vacuum vise than an electric.
Compare your compressor output in pounds per square in. "PSI" and cubic feet per minute "CFM" versus the amount of air needed to power the tool.
Also keep in mind you are running a 4 hp motor to power up a small sander motor. Per kilowat price it is cheaper to run an electric sander than an air sander.
Get a powered respirator like the aircap or trend. Technically a good respirator is fit and tested to the individual in industrial situations by a proferssional.
Don't rely on magazines or the web as your only sources for information . Call the manufacturers for more info. I do repair and purchasing for a living and that's how I did research before the web and still do in conjunction with the web. I never post a question. I just look for the answer from someone else's post. No new questions, just new people asking the old questions.
I actually never heard of abranet until I read your post. Googled their site and read up on it and had enough answers in a matter of minutes. Dynabrade is a good brand as well as Master Power, Sioux and other. Campbel Hausfield is cheesy.
I'd be looking at the Fein,Festool and other quality sanders over an air type.

I doubt that compressor would keep up. sanders need something like 10 cfm's and most of those compressor's are $800 and up and 60 gal or bigger.
If you want a dustless sander I would look at an electric festool first. They have some of the best woodworking tools and the dust collection on all their tools is amazing. They have several different sanders and have all kinds of accessories that work with them.

Another source for dustless sanders is Fein, IMO I think they are one of the best in the market place today. see attached link Good luck.

In my expierience air powered sanders create more not less dust. They are more aggresive than electric sanders. Your compressor will not run any air powered sander that I am familiar with. You need a huge volumn of air, depending on the type and brand of sander, from 12 cfm's up to 22 cfm's.
As one post said correctly, get yourself the correct safety equipment and stay with electric.

Thanks. Seems that everyone that has replied agrees with you. Guess I'll have to give Festool some business.
