The guy I bought the Unisaw from has some 6″ DC pipe he’ll sell me at a reasonable price. I’ve gotta ask about how he had his DC set up, though, because it seemed odd to me. From the saw, he had 6″ pipe, ran up a post across the ceiling then down, and transitioned to a 4″ pipe for about 6′, and then into the dust collector.
Wouldn’t this arrangement adversely affect the air flow?

In a word, yes.
If he needed to step down to a 4" diameter, probably because of the size of the intake at the dust collector, running 6" pipe until he absolutely had to make the transition would have been better from an air flow standpoint.
