Veneer is definitely getting thinner. Bought some veneer recently from my favorite supplier, Certainly Wood. Thought it felt kind of thin over what I’ve received in the past so I checked it out. It registers as .018″ on the calipers. As a comparison, veneer I purchased from them 2 years ago measures .020″ and veneer purchased back in 1995 was a whooping .025″.
I thought I had to be delicate in the past with the sandpaper but this time I blew through using 220 and a fairly light touch. The thinness doesn’t leave any room to remove surface imperfections.

I know. I wish as time went by, my waistline shrinked on a level equal to quality of goods.
Maybe the veneer was in the pool!?! That does cause considerable shrinkage you know. Like a frightened turtle!!! : )

Ever tried B & B Rare Woods? Great to work with, and everything I've gotten in the past has been great.
Google will show you the way.

Not only is their thickness going down, their response to small business and hobby types has gone down as well. The last few times I worked with them I felt ignored. That's enough for me. Adios. No big loss- their prices have been on the top of the price range as long as I have used them. Lots of good stuff but pricey.
Someone directed me towards Rosebud. I have been happy there but I don't think their veneers are thick either.
In the end, I do cut my own 1/16+ and clean it up as best I can and down it goes.

I think the Chinese plywood is at about .010. I pealed some off a couple of scraps that were damaged at a box store and I miked them up. I still have a small stash of some older pre-WW2 stock. All of my stock is more than .035.I think the problem is going to come when using various thickness veneers on the same job. I suppose some of the adhesives will have to be tinted to match as well. Hand sanded with finer grits, NO random orbital sanders.Ron
