Dan Faia named 2023 Cartouche Award winner, plus news from Oneida and Felder. From the Society of American Period Furniture Makers:
Each year, the Society of American Period Furniture Makers recognizes an individual whose achievements best reflect the mission of SAPFM. The Cartouche Award is SAPFM’s way of acknowledging the contributions made by craftsmen, educators, conservators, and supporters, professional or hobbyist, who have inspired or instructed others, or who have simply made the world more pleasing as a result of their skillful labors. Each year, the recipient of the award is honored at the Cartouche Award banquet, held in conjunction with Colonial Williamsburg’s annual conference Working Wood in the 18th Century.
The idea of presenting an award to recognize excellence in period furniture making was inspired by college football’s Heisman Trophy, given annually to award outstanding performance in the field.
Daniel Faia graduated from the Cabinet and Furniture Making program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, Massachusetts in 1994 where he currently serves as the department head. He has been on the faculty since shortly after graduation, first as an assistant to Will Neptune in the “short course” program. He became a full-time instructor in 2006 and was promoted to department head in 2010. He has also taught at the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts, The Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking and the Windsor Institute. He recently opened his own facility to teach small group workshops in Rollinsford, New Hampshire. He has produced the highest quality work for decades including high-style period work, wood carving and Windsor chairs. His work covers a wide range of styles and woodworking traditions.
Since his graduation from NBSS he has worked building furniture, period reproductions and traditional woodcarving. He has also participated in demonstrations, exhibits, and presentations for organizations such as Colonial Williamsburg, Concord Museum, Fruitlands Museum, Guild of New Hampshire Woodworkers, Museum of Fine Arts- Boston, Old State House- Boston, Old Sturbridge Village, The Society of American Period Furniture Makers, The Furniture Society, and The Old Manse.
In addition to teaching in person, demonstrating the craft to groups and actively building commissions Dan has written extensively for Fine Woodworking magazine beginning in 2003. He is an active member of the Guild of New Hampshire Woodworkers and SAPFM. We congratulate him on his selection as the 2023 Cartouche recipient and his story and past work will be featured in the 2023 edition of American Period Furniture. Oneida Air Systems Brings Automated Airflow Control to Smaller Shops
SYRACUSE, NY (October 6, 2022) –Oneida Air Systems’ new 3HP V-System with SMART Boost overcomes the limitations many woodworkers experience with conventional, fixed speed dust collectors. Where traditional collectors are fixed in speed and performance—unable to adapt to different port sizes, duct runs, and requiring careful blast gate management—the V-System’s SMART Boost variable-speed technology automatically adjusts to deliver up to 2-3 times more airflow to your tools.
Boasting 1030 CFM and a maximum of 21” static pressure, the steel cyclonic V-System with SMART Boost has a 6” diameter inlet and includes 95 square feet of HEPA-grade filter media. At 84” tall with 35-gallon drum, it fits under an 8-foot ceiling, bringing powerful dust collection to shops with limited vertical space.
Made in the USA and available now for $3995 MSRP from Oneida Air Systems (oneida-air.com, 800-732-4065), the 3HP V-System with SMART Boost is ETL certified and sold with choice of 35 or 55-gallon steel drum, stand, Dust Sentry bin fill level indicator, and remote.
Felder Group/AT and HM-Spoerri AG/CH are partners in the 2022 WorldSkills Competition Special Edition
The planned 2022 WorldSkills Vocational Championships in Shanghai have been cancelled due to lockdowns in the city and ongoing pandemic prevention and control restrictions in China. Nevertheless, we are glad that the WorldSkills 2022 competitions
are being held in 15 different host countries and will take place “according to plan”.
The competitions for furniture and construction carpenters will be held in Basel/CH. In order to create perfect prerequisites for the young furniture and construction carpenters and joiners, the Felder Group/AT and HM-Spoerri are providing the woodworking machines for the competition in their role as Leading Competition Partner.
Hansjörg Felder, Managing Director of the Felder Group, is proud to once again support the World Cup of Trades. “A competition inspires and we will certainly witness and experience top performances when the best of the best are able to compete internationally and demonstrate the high level of professional training in the carpentry trade worldwide. For apprenticing companies, this competition is more than just a recognition of their apprentices’ successful training, it is also a mission to continue their investment in future generations of young professionals”.
Raphael Betschart, Managing Director of HM-Spoerri AG and Felder Group Sales and Service Partner in Switzerland, is looking forward to the Wood Fair in Basel, which will host the WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition for cabinetmakers, carpenters and joiners this year. Together with the organizers – the Association of Swiss Master Carpenters and Furniture Makers (VSSM) and Holzbau Schweiz – the event will offer plenty of exciting action on site. Following the opportunity to watch the young participants at work live on the first four days of the fair, the big award ceremony will be held on the last day of the trade show.
Hansjörg Felder and Raphael Betschart wish all participants of the 2022 WorldSkills Competition Special Edition the best of luck and a successful contest.
