Bowl maker Michael Allison talks to Fine Woodworking managing editor Mark Schofield at the 2006 Fine Furnishings Show in Providence, R.I., about the techniques behind his graduated dye finish.

Allison, a former guitar refinisher, employs many of the same tools and techniques to finish his bowls that are used in the guitar industry. The result is a stunning sunburst of colors that accentuate the curves and scrollwork on his turned forms. Specifically, he uses an airbrush to apply Homestead brand TransTint dyes followed by a top coat that adds depth and dimension to the colors.
