1000yr old Redwood, Curly Maple and Bronze End Tables
comments (7) November 7th, 2011 in Reader's Gallery
These tables are the result from a gift of some 1000yr old 1/4 inch thick bookmatched pieces of Redwood. A guitar maker neighbor had these pieces for many years without being able to use them. He needed at least 1 inch thickness to work with. The challenge was to find the best showcase for the wood as well as preserve and protect the very delecate samples. The Bronze "Bezel" surrounding the Redwood did just that.
All the flutes were cut first on the table saw, veneered then all glued together. The oval void was then cut out.
The tops are mirror finished with lacquer and the bases are finished with tung, varnish and turpentine.
