Free Plan: Cherry Chest of Drawers

A chest of drawers is one of the most useful pieces of furniture out there, but the anatomy can be tricky. Christian Becksvoort makes the construction easy with smart solutions to cutting dadoes, dovetails, and adding a smooth runner system for the drawers.

One jig does it all. A dual-purpose jig will help you cut the dadoes and dovetails that will hold the rails and drawer runners as well as a long sliding dovetail for the bottom.

Half-blind dovetails in large panels. Dovetails can be a challenge on big pieces, but Becksvoort has tricks for keeping the pieces flat and aligned.

Rails and dividers guide the drawers. Learn how to keep the drawers from racking back and forth, tipping up, or dropping down.
By the way, all these techniques can be applied to Becksvoort's large Shaker cupboard in Fine Woodworking #219. That project incorporates many of these construction methods and adds a few. You also can learn to apply a face frame and how to build and fit Shaker doors and fit your drawers.
