I bought half of a pickle barrel bottom to build a door and a bed for some friends of mine, the bed I will post later. The bottoms are three inches thick this made it possible to try splitting the panels and book matching them. The straight grain of the clear red wood split fairly evenly and polished up nicely with steel wool. My favorite part of the door is how the split panels, in some places, are proud of the rest of the door making it impossible to wide belt adding to the hand built look.
