My day with Roy Underhill

A human saw stop. Roy told me that if you cut your finger with this saw, the motor knows right away and stops just as quick. (The goofy grin was his idea.)

Not long ago, I spent a week in NC taking photographs for a few upcoming articles. One of the articles is written by Roy Underhill. I drove about two hours east of Charlotte, NC to Pittsboro, where Roy has opened up a school. Pittsboro is a lovely little town, with a city hall right in the middle of a round about. That's a common feature in Southern towns, and being a Southerner I was glad to see. But I'm sure ya'll don't care about how I miss the South. So, on to my day with Roy.

It was very nice to do an entire photo shoot and not hear one machine motor scream, and not have clouds of dust blowing all around me. It was even nicer to have a shoot with Roy, who is friendly, charming, and a funny. I quickly forgot that we barely knew each other before the day began.

We got the photos down, he showed me some great tools, we had a nice lunch, and finished the day with a sudsy beverage. I hope that I get to work with him again some day soon.
