Woodworker: Diego Miscoria

Hoping to design a comfortable and beautiful bar stool without upholstery, Miscoria spent a lot of time on the backrest of this steam-bent ash stool (22-in. deep by 22-in. wide by 41-in. tall). He added a small concave curve in the upper middle that keeps the sitter’s backbone from leaning directly on the wood. He chose ash for its excellent bending qualities, and added a wenge detail on the back to make things interesting. He says next time he’ll probably add wenge to the armrests, too. The finish is wax, except for the footrest, where he used varnish to protect the wood from shoes. For more of Miscoria’s work, visit dimisco.com. Photo: Janko Furlan
