your favorite HSS jointer blades
I just picked up a used 6″ grizzly jointer. The knives aren’t that sharp, and I want to get a new pair so I can send one set out to be sharpened and continue working.
I could just get a set from grizzly, but knowing how varied the quality of steel can be (after my DW735 purchase) I thought I would ask…
Does anyone have a favorite company for aftermarket blades?
(I think I’m going to stick with HSS for now)
thanks –
Vincent

Life is what happens to you when you're making other plans .
I use the Grizzly blades on an old AMT 6" joiner.I have used other brands in the past, Grizzly cutters work fine and are inexpensive.I only was disatisfied with one brand over the last 40 years. Most jointer blades in my opinion are equal in quality.

Morning Vincent...
http://www.sunhillmachinery.com
I haven't used Grizzly and not aware of cost, but Sunhill is very reasonable with their HSS blades. Freud also makes a set for the 6" I believe.

Wow, they have good prices!Hope you are enjoying the granite fence BTW>I have my eyes firmly planted on the granite tablesaw.
I was waiting for steel city to introduce a $1500 or lower
tablesaw with a riving knife... but this tops all. I wrote to steel city and was told that a riving knife will indeed be a standard feature on the saw... I only wish they needed some more field testers...
Morning Vince...
Sunhill prices "are good"and the knives are not bad at all. The expensive blades mentioned by Rick are well made from very high grade steel and will hold and edge well.. but if you are on budget you can purchase several sets of the Sunhill for the same price.
The drawback to a lesser grade of steel is you do have to change them more often which I don't personally mind as time is a commodity with no production schedules. In a production situation I think the higher price is warranted as time is money and time down is money not earned. There's always two sides to every book cover...
The black granite has been mowing down red oak in it's maiden voyage. Got a lot of pecan (hickory family) to do in several weeks that will be more abrasive with denser make-up that will be a better test.
I think you will like the granite top.. but it is heavy so an extra hand may be needed to off-load it and get it up and mobile. But once that is done, I can see no draw-backs as that actually is a plus with the added dampening effect.. So.. go for it with the Ten Year Warranty!

There certainly is a difference in tool steels. Wisconsin Knife Works is highly regarded in the business. We use it on our Wadkin moulder There's plenty of others such as Charles Schmidt, Gudho, Amana.
I'll take a look at those brands and prices. Look like WKW has two stamps of approval here already. A bit on the high end, cost wise, but
if they last longer then that's just fine. I am currently using infinity knives in my planer, but haven't run enough feet yet to tell how they will hold up. Has anyone used those in a jointer or planer before? I chose them for my DW735 because they were the only aftermarket maker I could find and the dewalt blades seem to be made of aluminum or tin. thanks for the feedbackvincent
Check out eBay for WKW knives. I got a new set for my old 6" jointer for about half of the list price.

Wanna see something sad, google WKW. From the 'About Us' section of their site, "On December 28th, 1970, WISCONSIN KNIFE WORKS became a wholly owned subsidiary of Black & Decker. The acquisition of WKW included its three divisions, Sterling Cutter, Stercal-Oceana and Anderson Knife."
"I cut this piece four times and it's still too short."
Hi Vincent,
I've used Charles Schmidt and had good performance with their HSS knives.

Fire up "Leitz" on your browser and see what you get. You need to know the dimensions of the knives you require.
Leitz is German and a world industrial manufacturer of this sort of thing. Not cheap- the best never is -initially, but over time it justifies the initial outlay.....
WOWthat does look good...Now i'll just need a better jointer... maybe a felder combo?Looks like I'll have to make some phone calls to figure out pricing.
I found a list of sales offices in the US so that's a start. thanks for the tip. vincent
I decided to buy the infinity HSS blades made from geman tool steel- $31 for a 3 knife set for my 6" jointer. I meaured the knives and found that they are 6 1/16 x 13/16 x 1/8
which is an odd size. Infinity carried this size while some of the other makers didn't If they don't live up to my expectations, I'll go for the WKW or leitz blades next time. Do you think I could use a 6 x 3/4 x 1/8 knife (only 1/16 different in width and depth) ?
the cutterhead used springs and it looks like I could get away with a slightly different knife size. Thanks for all the feedback!now if i could just get WKW to make knives for my DW735 ...
