I just finished reading through my new Tools and Shops. Read the jointer comparison with great interest as I am getting ready to get one and am glad I waited. This new line from Wilke Machinery, Yorkcraft, appears to be and according to the author is basically the same machine as the Delta, with rack and pinion fence and all. I was sold on the 6″ because of price, but now looking at the 8″ Yorkie for $150 more than the Delta 6″, I may be stepping it up a notch.
One question, if you are reasonable adept at using a jointer, what is the effective maximum length of a piece of lumber that can be jointed on a 6″ machine?
Thanks

The rule of thumb is twice the total length of the bed. Of course I have heard other rules of thumb but this one seems to be the most widely accepted one.

Agree. Two times the length of the bed. Don't forget to check 0ut the 8 inch Grizzly.
