   Hello,

   Do a search on powder post beetle in the advanced search section.  There is a lot of info on them.   Powder post beetles have very small holes.  If the holes are about 3/8", they are a different type of beetle.  I have been told that the large ones are tasty if fried, by my friends that went to survival training.

   If the final demensions of the pieces you will build with this wood are such that they will fit into you kitchen oven, then heat the oven to ~180 and put them in for 1-2 hrs. I've read about this technique and tried it with good success.

   I've had termites in old walnut logs that I've cut up - I've seen the tunnels, the frass (sawdust/poop combo), and the termites, sometimes only a fraction of a termite hanging out of the saw cut!

   I've gotten rid of the termites by freezing for a few days, keeping at room temp or a week or two, then freezing again. Freezing just isn't very good for wet biological tissues.

   Never tried it with beetles. Try it with a scarp that you're sure has beetles in it and put the scrap in a mayo jar with little holes in the lid during the "warm 'em up" period. After a few cycles, let us know if you see any frass. The wormy wood can add interest to your work or you can fill the holes with whittled tapered sticks hammered in and cut off at the surface (etc).
