I need to build some workbenches and undercabinets in my new 24X37 workshop so that I can put everything inits proper place insdtead of the pile on the saw table or wherever it lands.Ineed some suggestions on plans and tops.I want plenty of drawers for all the small stuff and larger drawers for the hand held power tools.Cabinets above would also be great.
Thanks,
Joe McDonnell

Norm shows the layout of his shop on his web site, and has plans available for all the benches and racks.
Inletjoe,
I've been working all summer on laying out my workshop to accomodate all the stuff as efficiently as possible. I will fail and have to do it again but that is because my space is too small to begin with, unlike you.
IMO, wall space is a very important asset and needs to be hoarded. Secondly, because this space is focused on production, flexibility is very important...however, some tools, benches, etc. need to be in a fixed location for structural integerity. There are a bunch of other ism's but to get to my point, I don't think the long work counter with cabinets above and below is the best way to go. I find a tall 3' wide cabinet with doors can provide more storage and better safer access than 15' of overhead cabinets and save the wall space for things like jigs. Two of these cabinets, one for paint and stain supplies, one for power tools with accessories, just about covers the needs. I have also incorporated draws into my rolling and non-rolling tables. When i finish my new workbench that will go in a fixed location and above that i will build a shallow cabinet for the hand tools. Yesterday I decided to store my wood high, in 3-4 locations rather than all together (again, severe space constraints) The two or so feet down from the ceiling is kinda wasted space. I want to seperate out long and short pieces...cauls, etc. for stock...boards from surplus sheet goods..smaller amounts in each area..also flexibility to store new lumber appropriately while adapting to the environment.
Anyhow, just a few thoughts from a person who is working in a 20x12 space and sharing that with an oil tank ....lol
PS. My fathers name was Joe Mc Donnell...kinda shocked me when I saw it

This website "Bob's woodworking shop" has some wonderful and practical advice on work benches, shop arrangment, etc. I highly recommend it.
