Hi everyone,
I don’t post in the knots forum often (I mainly hang out in breaktime), but I’ve seen some posts here from people who live or have lived in Japan. I’m married to a Japanese woman, we have three young kids and we’ve been talking recently about a bit of a lifestyle change. I’m a reasonably successful General Contractor, but the daily grind is starting to rub me the wrong way not to mention my wife.
We would be happy to go over there for a couple of years, live in an apartment, keep it simple and just kind of get back to reality. Sorry for all this history, my questions mainly lie in the realm of logistics. I would love to work as a carpenter over there and learn some of their skills and techniques. I have done quite a bit of timber framing and dabbled in furniture making so I think I would be able to hold my own as an average carpenter. The transition from building a few houses a year, to being a grunt again might be tough, but that would be part of the adventure.
Anyway I would appreciate any advise from anyone with knowledge of japan, specifically I would greatly appreciate real life living in Japan advise.
Thanks a lot!
Josh

There is a book out there about building a Japanese style house in CA and the athour lived in Japan for a number of years it would be worth getting in touch with him and getting his take. I think the book is called "Building a Japanese house" a very nice book. You might also contact the people at Hida tools in Berkeley CA they might be able to put you in contact with someone. Good luck

There was a mamber of this forum who does work in Japan. Hawai is supposed to be a good place to work as well.
Pardon my spelling,
Mike
Make sure that your next project is beyond your skill and requires tools you don't have. You won't regret it.
