I finally realize I need a decent bench I plan on building it myself and have read all the books for ideas. Likely 24 or 30 wide and 60-72 long. I really don’t want to glue up the top. I know there are a bunch of companies selling laminated maple tops of 1 3/4 to 2 1/4 thick. Has anyone bought one from grizzly or another company and have any advise on where to get the top?
Thanks

A lot of bowling alleys are going under and they usually sell their lanes by the foot. I know a lot of guys who have built wall long benches out of this material. It's worth a try.
I have also heard that they contain a lot of metal reinforcement within.Chris @ http://www.flairwoodwork.spaces.live.com

Thanks guys. I just want to get something that is flat. It looks like grizzly and global industry have the best prices. I have seen some reviews of grizzly but nothing about global industry. If any body knows that would help.
bwood,
I bought a top from Grizzly about three years ago, maple 72X30 I think, it has made a fine top..remains flat..don't think you'll be disappointed...would recommend getting the thickest top you can...the extra weight adds to the stability...my table doesn't move during any woodworking I do on it.

i've heard of someone laminated two ikea butcherblock countertops. i'm not sure it's a great idea, but it'd be cheaper than a griz top.

December 23 , 2005. A clever way to create a very solid, thick laminated top was posted by on the Workbench Design Forum. Eric laminated together two inexpensive Ikea laminated countertops to create his workbench top.
