Attended the Woodworking Show just up the road in Houston yesterday. It was my first show of that type, so don’t have anything to compare it with. The highlight for me was using a Lie Nielsen 4 1/2 on a piece if Rock Maple. It was absolutely an epiphany for me. What an amazingly sweet tool. I couldn’t believe the shavings I was getting and I am really a novice with a hand plane. Lots of other good presenters there too.

Hi Scotty
Isn't that just the grandest sensation!
The LN #4 1/2 is going to spoil you for just about anything that you might own. Life is not going to be the same. :)
Of course, you are all welcome to come along and do it again at the next Perth Woodshow (in August I believe), at which I will be demonstrating LN planes/tools on their stand.... (now THAT will confuse a lot of forum members!).
Regards from Perth
Derek
Yep. When I finally pout it down, I exclaimed to the guy at the booth, "Damn, now I'm gonna have to throw away all of my planes!" He grinned and agreed. I don't know how many conversations I had with folks who said it was an addiction. I can sure see how.

Well, I guess I've gotten in where you left off. I just bought my very first "real" plane, the Lie-Nielsen 4-1/2. I've had a Stanley low-angle block plane for years and have used it to ease edges and shear end grain, but I've never gone into hand planing until now. I'm about to start a bookcase of cherry and it struck me that smoothing the top and shelves -- especially the top which won't fit through my planer -- might best be done with a grownup tool. I hope to prepare the iron and chipbreaker tomorrow.
I suppose I won't have the same appreciation for the L-N tool that you have. I'll try to remember that I'm getting spoiled right away.
Lie Nielsen Toolworks will be at Jeff Miller's shop in Chicago, Illinois next Friday and Saturday. I'll be there if my health improves. I've had a wee bit of a relapse the last few days with the pneumonia. Hope to see any and all there.
Jeff
