Hi all,
Well it is just about to happen, as of 11306 I will retire, I would like to know who some of the woodworkers in the area are, that might like to get together and share our common interest. If all goes well I will have time for my much neglected shop as I plan to toss my clock and use a calendar for a time piece. Please feel free to respond here or email me .
Thanks Marvin

Hi Marvin,
I live in the Pace area and have been woodworking for a couple of years. Retired Air Force now working for Santa Rosa County.
I have 5 years to go to retire completely, but I do have most weekends free to make sawdust. I think a woodworking group would be a great idea. I know of one other WW who lives off of Pine Forest Road in Escambia County.

Hey Marvin, Been here for more yrs than I want to admit. Worked with furniture for, oh, about 30 yrs. I build custom Studio Furniture and what ever else pays the bills. Sometimes you can't be picky. I'm all the way on the far west side of town in Beulah. I know of a couple more furniture makers in town and some wood turners. Feel free to email I even know a couple of people in Pace/Milton.EarlFurniture...the Art of a FurnitureMaker
Hey there Earl,
I go over to your area quite regularly to buy my wood. I get it from Ozark Hardwoods off of Hwy 90.
I am a pure hobbiest. I've built several pieces (an old-fashioned Oak Ice Box(wife's birthday); built-in bookshelves for my family room; a cherry shoeshine box for my son-in-law who's in the Air Force). I'm currently making a walnut / maple "steamer chest" for my son (who's also in the Air Force). It's nearly complete - just finishing the pull-out trey.
Good to hear from you and if you're interested I'd be happy to get together and talk shop.
Joel
(I haven't figured out how to e-mail someone from here yet)
Joel,
Do you have an address for Ozark Hardwoods? The Mobile area is a bit limited on wood selection - - well, we do have a Woodcraft store, but the small quantities and large prices are pretty scary.
Ray
Hi Ray,
If you take the Hwy 90 exit (may be the 1st Florida exit coming from Mobile) South, it's about 2 miles. Right after you cross Beulah Road (actually about a ¼ mile) on your left. It's in a "U-Store It" type facility. You can't miss it if you get that close. Its 5991 W. Nine Mile Rd. (US 90)
The phone number is 850-941-0308. They will plane the wood down to any thickness and give you 1 Straight Edge with no cost. If you call in advance, they can tell you if they have your desired species in stock and what thicknesses. The wood price varies by quality: i.e.: Cherry FAS is $6:00 bf as is Walnut. They will also have some priced at $5 bf. You choose. Granted it's not cheap, but with the planing and straight edge it's decent. Also, if they don't have your selection in stock - they can order it.
Oh by the way -- I am in no way affiliated with them other than as a customer.
I did find a place in Tennessee that has kd Cherry & Walnut at $2 bf -- it might be worth a run if several of us can put together an order of several hundred bf. They seem to have most of the "common" hardwoods and softwoods at similar prices.

Joel,
do you mind sharing the place in TN that has the cherry and walnut? By the way, I'm from Pensacola and have been living in Birmimgham for the last 10 years.
Thanks,
Scott
Hi Scott,
Go to URL: http://www.woodfinder.com/listings/001341.php
That will tell you about them. They are close to Knoxville, TN.
HTH,
Joel
Man, do I miss living in E. Tennessee!
I'm working on some small tables now with walnut I cut and hauled to the local mill east of Knoxville I've been lugging it around for 25 years now. That air dried walnut sure is beautiful!
I'll bet you do miss E. Tennessee. Especially when going to buy wood. I've attached a Walnut Steamer Chest I'm making for my son. It's nearly ready for finishing - hopefully I'll be finished with it by Christmas.
Its walunt with maple accents. the corner braces are solid maple with dados to receive the front/back & side panels. Very strong joints.
Joel
Here's one of the tables I'm making (3 identical tables total) from my E. Tennessee walnut. The middle will get the granite on the floor in the background.

The natural wood purists will probably freak, but where these are going there is just too much natural wood already - maple cabinets, tigerwood floor - that the walnut, as pretty as it is, would just clash. I also wanted to try ebonizing with iron buff (steel wool in vinegar) and figured this was as good a place as any to play with it. These will be plant stands, living inside in winter and outside (protected) in summer.

Hey W, I can understand your delimma - but I'm thinking some cheap poplar or ash might have been a little less painful. :-) or would that wood not have finished as well?
I do like the look of those tables - what was the process you used to do that finish?
Joel
I didn't use up all the walnut :-)
The thing about the walnut is that the iron buff does a chemical reaction with the tannins to turn the color - more than skin deep. So far in the picture I have 2 coats of the iron buff, light sanding w/220 in between each coat, and a coat of MinWax Ebony pigment stain. All per Jeff Jewett's reco in his book.
Next comes one or two coats of shellac (Zinsser Seal-Coat 2#) and two coats Target pre-cat conversion varnish. Since this is going to live both inside and out and be abused with weather and water spills tough was more important than pretty. I have the Target on my kitchen cabinets and it's been great so far (12+ months).
I like that. Sweet. you could send it here! I'll hold it for ya! :-)

Thanks Jarhead,
As a Navy Corpsman having served with the 3rd Batt/9th Marines/India Co., I know you guys aren't easily impressed. Unless of course you're wounded and a "doc" patches you up. Ha ha
Semper fi indeed!

Hey Ray, I live in Mobile. There used to be a shop that sold wood on Leroy Stevens road. Across from Dirt Inc. They are called Classic Hardwood. Been awhile since I have been there.
I usually buy from a friend that sells wood, woodworking equip and the such. Give him a call and tell him Eric Darst gave his name to you. 251-865-3628, his name is Russell Brown, very good people, selection varies but has very good prices.

edited to change name on wood contact.....

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out next time I'm in Mobile - we live in Jackson, AL.
Hi to everyone, sorry for the late response, but as I said two more days I have been up to my eyes in the retirement process. Have mercy, I think it is harder ( more hoops to jump through ) to retire than to get hired. Please do not think I posted and ran as I will be back in touch with anyone who thinks the idea of sharing our common interest would be a " good thing" , sorry Martha . Again thanks to all.
If everyone was a lot fatter, we would all be closer together!
Jarhead,
Sorry to snoop in on your post. I live in Picayune, MS and get over to Mobile occasionally to the Woodcraft store (for tools, not lumber). Would you mind if I bookmark Tom's name and number? It's getting harder to find quality lumber close to home lately.
Thanks,
Lee
No problem. I just spoke to him, he has some 8/4 spalted maple, randon widths, 8'+ long. $2.75 BF. Also has some Brazilian Cherry, Bolivian Walnut. Named a bunch others but these peaked my attention.

I said his name was Tom Brown but had a brain fart.......His name is Russel Brown, sorry for any confusion!

Hi Marvin,
I live in AL, about a 3-4 hr. drive from P'Cola. I'll retire in April and will be making lots of sawdust then (just making little shavings now).
Ray
Hi Marvin,
Congratulations on your retirement.
I retired from the Navy after 20 yrs and have been planning to move permanently to Pensacola for the last two years - I just haven't gotten my act together to get'er done yet. This spring, all systems are go for selling the house here and moving down there.
I would definitely be interested in a woodworking club.
BTW - just spent a week in Pensacola in mid-November - a great time to go to the beach!
Take care, Ed
Ed glad to hear you' ll be moving to the area. I too like the idea of a ww'r club. My brother retired after 27 years in the USN about 3years ago. He too is a ww'r. Due to the late hour, I'll email you later and talk in greater length about the Esca/Rosa club idea.
Thanks

Woodworking apprentice
Hey Marvin.
I saw your post and was wondering if you ever thought about teaching your trade. I would love work with wood but I never seem to have any luck. I think I use the wrong tools. I would like to talk to you about maybe having you teach me the basics. I would like to make a window seat with storage and bookshelves. Think about it and email me if your interested. [email protected].
Thanks
Amy
Woodworkers get together
Hello Marvin,
i came across this old post and was wondering if you ever got a group together for regular meetings or anything like that?
I'm looking for some help with some small woodworking projects and would like to meet some other woodworkers in the area.
Thanks,
Michael
