I just installed a steel French door in our new addition. I would like to place a “veneer” over the steel interior face of the door rather than painting. Anyone have a suggestion as to what adhesive to use? I am planning on using 1/4″ thick maple as the surface.

Contact cement. If the steel is prepainted, sand with 80g to ensure adhesion.
Just remember if you use a lacquer based finish, the solvent can delaminate the wood from the steel.

On surfaces such as metal a paper backed veneer and contact cement would the recommendation. I wouldn't recommend contact cement for 1/4" maple. We've used epoxy or with 1/4" maple. I've seen some incredible renditions of wood grains by skilled
