Does anyone know of a web site that gives good data on various species of wood? The data I am interested in includes: workability, stability, and finishing characteristics.

Good site. Thanks Jackie.
I have spent some time on woodweb, but I don't recall seeing the answer to oldschool's question there.
Paxton Lumber company published a great catalog back in the seventies and eighties, that had lots of good info like you are wanting. It was in chart form, and was very handy to use.
The wood species, with common and alternate names, were listed in the left column in alphabetical order, then across the page there were categories like color, density, durability, texture, workability, availability, finishing, beauty rating. These were all given a 1 -3 rating with 1 being the best, and 3 the lowest.
I have had a couple of copies, but I don't think I have seen one in years. It was a very handy reference, and if it is not still in print, there ought to be something out there like it to take its place.
There was even a section with thumbnail photos with a paragraph or two of other interesting data.
i sure miss jon...

Hello Oldschool-----There is a book titled "Cabinetmaking and Millwork" written by John L Feirer that I refer to quite often . There is a chart in the book that gives characteristics of hardwoods that affect machining. Also a chart giving information as to machining and related properties of hardwoods.
Unfortunately, I have not found a single source that has all the information that pertains to wood properties. If you find one let me know too!!!
