I live in central Washington (Yakima) and have an extremely limited source for hardwood. I would gladly drive to the Seattle area for better pricing and selection. Can any of you give me any suggestions? Thanks.

Two that I've heard about: Crosscut Hardwoods and Edensaw. I've only personally been to the Edensaw in Port Townsend, but a number of people I know of shop at Crosscut.
We need Dennis to pitch in here.
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I can't speak to the competitiveness of pricing but ....
Crosscut hardwoods and Edensaw have an exquisite inventory of raw material.

You might also try Compton Lumber, 3847 1st Ave. S., which is virtually right across the street from Crosscut. They have a large selection of hardwoods, as well as dimensioned lumber, and are priced competitively.
I've been doing business with Crosscut for several years and for the most part have been very happy with them.
Accross the street for Crosscut is Compton Lumber but I have not had good experinces with them.
I have also done business with Edensaw and have been happy with them too. I am not sure if their Seattle warehouse does retail - their Port Townsend store does though.
There are a few wholesale (resale)sorurces in the Seatltle area also - but they normally do not let you do any sorting. The best of these would be Speciality Forest Products in Algona - no sorting but they have given me good stuff.Brady Hardwoods and Continental Hardwoods are wholesalers as well and their prices are good but no sorting and sometimes you don't get the best stuff.

I've had good luck at both Compton and Crosscut. You will also find Crosscut in Portland if you're going that way. For smaller quantities of wood you could check with either of the two Rockler stores or Woodcraft in Seattle, or the Sumner Woodworking Store. All have tools, books, and wood. Rockler has more hardware. There is also a woodworking store in Tacoma that sells lots of specialty woods such as figured maple and burls - lots of stuff for turning, plus a fair supply of boards. They also have a few new and used machines. I know that you are looking for wood, but you should know about the guys that sell the Jet/Performax/Powermatic scratch and dent equipment. They're just a couple of blocks south of the Jet Warehouse on the West Valley HWY in Auburn.
As long as you are on the West side you might want to check out Martin Lumber and the Puget Sound Woodworking Center. Both are in Everett and quite close to each other. Martin Lumber has a huge selection and the prices are pretty darn good. Also, the yard manager Todd always seems to have a few board feet of some really unusual stuff too. Good luck-

Thanks very much for all the info. I see some common suggestions and will try those. Once again, thanks very much.

If you ever get to Portland check out Gilmer Wood, 2211 NW St Helens RD, 503-274-1271.
