How wide can I make a bridle joint before I have to worry about wood movement? I am making a pretty sturdy base for a hallway bench and was going to cut a bridle joint about 3 inches in depth and glue the cross piece in. Is this too wide?

Assuming the wood is dried a 3" bridal joint should be fine.
