Hi, I have a rather large 2′ high by 4′ wide oak picture frame that, with the glass, is quite heavy.
To complicate matters, the frame itself is only built from 1″ x 2″ stock (my wife suggested that she didn’t want the frame to be so big that it drew attention away from the picture itself.
So…now I need to hang it. If I install a ring or hook to the middle of the top rail, it bows with the weight.
I’m thinking of attaching a larger piece of oak to the rear of the frame that extends the full 4′ across, immediately under the top rail. With this extra support, the top rail will be strong enough to support the weight without bowing.
The frame has been stained and then covered in a coat of polyurethane.
It’s an awkward spot to work from so removing the finish will be difficult.
Will wood glue stick to a stained surface? The new piece will be unfinished so adhesion to it won’t be an issue, but I’m not sure it’ll stick to the existing stained frame.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Dave

No the glue will not stick to the finished surface. You will have to scrape, sand or something to the finished surface to get the new rail to adhere. The only problem I see is that this new piece is only going to be held in there with glue? So an endgrain to long grain glue surface is not the best. If you were worried about the weight of the picture bowing the top rail, I would be worried about the weight breaking the glue bond as well. Just my thoughts

Thanks for the input.I wonder if it'd be better if I drilled both pieces and inserted and glued in a series of small dowels, say a foot apart.???
You should hang a heavy frame from the side pieces of the frame, not on the top. Screw a couple of D-ring picture hangers on the side pieces and use some picture hanging wire.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Thanks,I took your advice and it works well.I appreciate the advice.Dave
Hammer mentioned fastening to the side pieces. I was thinking of fastening to the bottom rail with the wires running through loops or eyes on the top to keep the picture up right and from flopping over. Sounds like you already have the problem.
