I have a set of plans for a screen door that calls for either Western Red Cedar or Douglas Fir. In addition, the plan calls for the wood to be clear and quarter sawn. After a lot of phone calls and searching on the web, it doesn’t appear there’s a whole lot of this stuff here in Rhode Island or a nearby state (MA or CT).
What would be a good alternative (and readily available) to the above that’s stable and looks good with a clear finish?
Thanks.
Carl

Hi Carl ,
You can also use Eastern White Pine in a clear grade , or maybe you can find Fir in a v.g. grain. What ever you use you probably will want 5/4 stock or to net 1" - 1 1/8" for the finished product.
good luck dusty
Carl,
Many of the big box stores around MA, RI, CT carry decking material which is qtr. swan doug fir I believe....and reasonable price. If that is not wide enough I might try Ipe....Anderson McQuaid, cambridge, MA
Mahogany is always a good choice for any exterior project. If that doesn't work, my regular hardwood supplier is recommending Spanish cedar as being more readily available and somewhat cheaper.
