Mr. Ano,
My son in law wants me to make him a box for an expensive dial indicator he has. Would Spanish Cedar be ok to use. I planned to cut off the top a a 2″ board and route out an outline of the dial indicator and put adhesive felt in the box. I also have hard maple, mesquite, and walnut to use if Spanish Cedar is not suitable.
thanks in advance for your time,
Chuck

Spanish Cedar, or any of the other wwods you mention, will be fine for the application.
Chuck, do NOT use the Spanish cedar for this purpose. It's volatile extractives tend to condense on metal surfaces and leave a gummy residue. Any of the other woods you mention would be better choices.

Jon,
thanks for the warning about Spanish Cedar. I wondered about the wood since it was good for humidors. My SIL has expensive tools and I wouldn't want to hurt any of them.
