Need the advice of anyone who has built/carved a carousel horse and finished it in a clear finish. Recommended woods are Euro Lime, basswood, poplar, etc. for ease of carving, but I’m afraid they are pretty boring in finished appearance. Is cherry too difficult for a novice? Cedar is probably too fragile. How about butternut (if I can find it in Mn.)? Realize this is a bit far afield, but know there is someone out there………

Butternut is readily available in Minnesota try Johnson logging in Cannon Falls for green rough or Northern Hardwoods (also in Cannon Falls) for kiln dried.
I've seen a black walnut horse, but then I love working with black walnut since it is such a well behaved wood..
i know that yellow cedar is been used for carving figureheads on ships for the weathering and carving qualities..... my 1/2 cents worth ..... bear
