Kendal,
Without knowing any detail about quantities, types of wood (domestic or exotics), or whether you want it dried and surfaced or rough sawmill stock it is kind of hard to know what to tell you.
If you are looking for kiln dried, a good selection of domestics with some not so exotic woods (mahogany, spanish cedar, etc.) and already surfaced wood in small to medium quantities, Summer Lumber & Timber in Nashville is a good choice.
For a bigger variety of exotics, as well as domestics I would suggest looking at the Middle Tenn Lumber Co. warehouse in Dickson. They also have a good selection of sheet goods (melamine board, hardwood veneer plywood, etc.) and hardwood flooring. What they have on hand is dried and surfaced, but I believe you can get rough cut lumber too if you order a decent quantity.
Hope this helps - there are a ton of local sawmills around that you can get rough cut raw oak, cherry, walnut, poplar, hickory, etc. if that is what you are interested in, but a lot of them are smaller operations that you have to track down (often by word of mouth) since they don't do any advertizing. Also, a lot of mills just do pulpwood or pallet wood processing, but often if you specify what you want and how you want it cut (and are getting a big enough quantity), they will do custom jobs for pennies a board-foot.

Thanks for the excellent answer. I should have been more specific. I am a part-time wood crafting enthusiast who enjoys building various projects. I will be tackling an entertainment center soon if my wife has her way (and we all know what that means!). I like using exotics but am not opposed to domestics. I also am interested in rough sawn as it is generally less expensive. On recent projects I have encountered some problems with the wood I have been getting and I'm having warping/twisting issue. Therefore I am looking into other suppliers.
Thanks for your help and if you hear of any other locations please let me know.

Thanks for the details. I would definately suggest checking out Middle Tenn Lumber. I don't really know how their prices for exotics stack up with other places, but they have a really nice selection and you can get some really spectacular pieces. I saw one slab of mahogany (Honduras, I believe) there that was over 4" thick, 30" wide and 20 feet long. I don't remember what they said the person ordered it for, but it was an impressive chunk of wood (with an impressive price, I'm sure)! I also saw a beautiful zebrawood board (6/4 x 8" x 8') there back in the winter I should have gotten, but I didn't have a project lined up to use it on and couldn't justify buying it on a whim.Anyway, it is a HUGE warehouse (so all the wood is stored indoors) right on Highway 46 (take the 172 exit off of I-40 in Dickson, go left on Hwy 46 for about 1 1/2 miles). I don't work there - but I have bought a fair amount of wood from them, as well as ~1500 sq. ft. of unfinished oak flooring. They are even open on Saturday until noon.-Chuck
wow! great info.
Thanks again

I am in Nashville and my major supplier is local.
No exotics but the best sawed local wood that I have ever seen. Kiln dried on site. The owner builds entertainment centers, and the wood supply is for his own use and resale. No minimums,I do not know about large quantities, since I buy a few boards at a time.
E-mail me if you want other info.
