Hi,
I am planning on building hope chests for my two daughters. The chest will be 46in by 18in wide and 24in tall. I have found an 18in wide piece of mahogany for the tops.
My question is: do I need any type of cross grain support for the wide chest top to prevent warping? The mahogany is 4/4 after planing on both sides.
Thanks for your help,
Tim Henshaw

Hi Tim,
Wow. I wish I could find some 18" wide mahogany. Nice score.
Even though mahogany is very stable, I would put some thin battens across the inside of this lid to help keep it flat. You can slot screw them on. Or you can cut a dovetailed slot for a key to fit into that will keep them flat. Of course you can also use breadboard ends to keep this panel flat. But something to keep it flat is advised I believe.
Good luck. Gary
