I didn’t want to hijack the other thread, so I’ll start another one. My whine is about the dust collection connections on hand held power tools. It would be ever so handy if these connections were standardized to work with standard shop vac hoses (1-1/4″ or 2-1/2″).
I have two 4″ blast gates at my bench – one with a 4″ to 2-1/2″ reducer. I also have a 1-1/4″ shop vac hose with a 2-1/2″ fitting that connects to the shop vac – or to the blast gate reducer. When I use the ROS, router, biscuit joiner, etc, I plug the shop vac hose into the blast gate reducer and plug the the small end into the tool – and that’s where I have the problem. Most of mine are close but I often need to use a piece of duct tape to keep the shop vac hose from falling off. I’ve tried those adaptors, but that just adds more “junk” to the setup and makes it awkward.
How hard can it be, anyway?? – lol

I've had a similar thought / whine:

I have complained about this for years - count me in
I can't say for certain what manufacturers do with these tools. I know that some companies donate them to woodworking programs at high schools and trade schools. Matt Berger

I totally agree. Sounds like the computer industry years ago with the scsi, usb, firewire, etc. "standards." They only will choose what benefits them.

Dave: I've had good success with some plumbing parts such as sink drain couplings, rubber abs pipe couplings etc. It's just chance that these things adapt various vacuum hose diameters but buy a few and play with them, they are cheap and last. For instance I have a 1.5'' 90* rubber connector for drain/vent use that fits my vacuum hose and my bench top oscillating sander dust outlet perfectly. 1.5'' sink drain coupling works on metal vacuum tubes and nozzles for various hook-ups. Polyurethane glue will make them permanent if you want. Good luck, Duke

I agree... Little work.. Amazing what you can to with PVC and a little lathe... Or even wood!

Thanks for the consideration but actaully I'd hoped for comments like yours! Why not complain about things we don't like, maybe some company will listen and improve their line of tools? Then we can buy their tools and Tauton press would get rich from endorsements and send us all free copies of our favorite magazine.
(I am allowed to dream aren't I? <G>
All the complaining in the world won't help. They don't understand English in China and Japan! :-)
A bad day woodworking is better than a good day working -- yes, I'm retired!
81 treehouse,
Yeh but somebody who sells the stuff here in America does.. that's who we'll reach and then they go to their suppliers and have them make improvments..
actually my experiance with Japan and Hong Kong (at that time a British Crown Colony) is that many could speak at least some English and within a short time I found i could use a few words myself.. (and I have a tin ear for languages<G>)

Was in China and Japan a few times.. Hell, some speak better English than I do!
I recently read a review where Dewalt now has random orbit sanders that have stanndard vacuum hose attachments built in so somebody is listening.
