Who’s ever heard of an Elephant jointer?
I recently saw a 7″ “Elephant” jointer for sale. Am I right in thinking that Elephant is some now defunct important company?

If the jointer was only 7" & they were trying to joint a elephant no wonder they aren't around anymore.
They should have known they could only eat an elephant one bite at a time.
Sorry I my resistance was low...
Matt,
How was their grammar/spelling in the ad? My guess is that it was meant to be an adjective.

Chris,I somehow missed your post. Sorry. Here is the headline from the ad on Craigslist: 7" elephant 48" long floor model jointer. I'm not interested in the jointer, but my curiosity was piqued by the name. I don't think that "elephant" is being used to modify "jointer" here. If it is, I can't imagine what the person is trying to say about the jointer. This is my personal signature.
MK,
Elephant jointers are used for flattening the bottoms of elephant feet; hence the two part question:
Why do ducks have flat feet?
For stamping out forest fires.
Why do elephants have flat feet?
For stamping out flaming ducks.
Glad to be of help.

I like it! I guess now we know the facts. A few years ago the Colorado Department of Transportation came by our place and put up a barbed wire fence along one edge of our property. When we asked them why after nearly 20 years they needed to put up a fence they responded "to keep the cows off the highway" now keep in mind there are no cows for miles and the highway is 7 miles from us. At the time we couldn't understand what the cows would be doing stampeding through our property but now we finally know. Apparently all the stamping of flaming ducks by the elephants is causing discontent in the cows and they are running blindly toward the highway!
I feel so much better now!
Have a great day,
Madison
Maddy,
Sounds like maybe someone in charge wanted to keep that crew off the highway...
Ray
What's up with madison? startin' to feel a bit uneasy around 'im. Is there a rule about number of animal references? Moderators? I don't think I'll be jointing again any time soon . . .Brian
If you think Madison is a him no wonder you feel uneasy around her!

Brian my poor boy,
First off I ain't no boy, at least not the last time I checked....hmm. Nope still not a boy:-).
We're out here in the mountains and there aren't too many conversations that don't involve some critters but if they're making you uncomfortable I'll try to limt the critters to only one or two per post. But you've got to promise to let Ray (joinerswork) have a critter or two as well!

To get back to seriousness, Tyzack used an elephant in their saw medallions, perhaps the blade in the plane was made by Tyzack, and has an elephant stamped in it. That would account for the "elephant" moniker.
Mike
Sorry for any confusion. This is a 7" power jointer, not a handplane. But I did some better research on the net and found one or two references to an import tool company called Elephant.I've had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn't it. - Groucho Marx
I think Elephant was a brand name put on some taiwanese imports. I've had one of these jointers (6 in) for about 20 years, works fine. Art
There was/is a casting company in Taiwan that has as it's logo an elephant. All their castings and tools had an elephant somewhere on the machine or on the knobs. In fact, the original Jet 1980's bandsaw I had had elephants on the knobs to open the wheel covers. Other Taiwanese manufactured tools used the same castings so the "elephant" branded tools could be almost any 1980's power tool.Howie.........
My 14 in bandsaw also has the Elephant label. It appears to be largly identical and uses the same fence as a Jet from the same period(mid 80's) It also has performed well. Art
Elephant is an old Brand name! Look at this craigslist ad nearby my house it has the logo on it in one of the pictures! http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/tls/3835804439.html
