Dust collection:
I have recently purchased a Porter cable miter saw, Agazzani band saw,General 8′ jointer, General drill press, and a router with a Bench Dog table. What would be an ideal dust collection system for this equipment?
In the garage where my mini shop will be set up is the main house central vacume system. It is rather powerful. Couldn’t I just tap directly into that?
Thanks

A central vacuum would probably not work well for shop dust collection. Most tools need a large volume of air, not necessarily large suction. If you don't have sufficient volume the dust and chips won't be collected and carried well. That's why the duct to most wood working tools is either 4", 5", or 6" diameter.
The capacity of the vacuum bin would be too small, too. You'll fill it up in no time, especially with the jointer, and if you get one, a planer.
There are lots of threads in the archives at Knots about dust collection.
I have an Oneida system and like it a lot.
Good advice. thanks.
More then you ever wanted to know about dust collection. :)

Thanks for the info. You are right it is a lot of info. Maybe I'll just go to Eagle Tools where I bought my stuff and say "give me what i need."Thanks
I have a shop with a 12" inlet blower, and a shop vac in an out building for dust collection. The shop vac is set up with a 2 stage filter. I like the high velocity, low volume shop vac for stuff like a mitre saw, band saw, palm sander, or top of the table saw, where fine dust is created. The big blower works great for the shaper, planer, bottom of the table saw, tenoner, and jointer. I did use a whole house vac on a palm sander when I was sanding my kitchen floor. The sanding took 2 hrs, but the dust collection was great.
Check out the dust collection forum archives at woodweb. There are posts there from people who have experience.
Thanks so much for the info. It helps a great deal.Gil
