As a hobbyist woodworker, I’m always looking to add new tools to my limited collection so as not to always borrow from friends and family. I’d like to add a shoulder plane and can’t decide between the medium and large Lie Nielsen.
If you had to choose just one, which would it be?

Large.
I've got to second Napie's suggestion: I got a large LN shoulder plane and it is my go to. I also have a medium LV, but the LN has more authority and I like the traditional look. I also have a Preston 5/8" that is by and large my favorite--just feels like velvet in the hand, but alas, these are few and far between!

Thanks to you both. Looks like the large LN it is.
Bear in mind that you can pull a shoulder plane as well as push. Experiment! Some say the ergonomics of the LV are better, but I find little difference. The LN is very traditional looking and has exceptional re-sale value should you decide you do not like it.

A good friend who is an accomplished woodworker also recommended the LN for future resale value. If memory serves, there's not that big a difference in price between the LN and LV.
Think about the scope of your work. I have both the large and small LN shoulder planes and both work well but the little one is great fun and a joy to use for the smaller work.
