I am planning to buy a Jet 16/32 Plus to smooth resawn lumber and veneers. It comes with an 80 grit strip.
150 grit and 220 grit are also available. If I buy 2 additional belts, they throw in two 50″ Parallel Clamps and an industial mobile base.
For those of you using a drum sander, which grits do you use? If you use mostly 1 particular grit, is it because it’s inconvenient to change paper?

I have a double drum and run 80 on the first drum and 120 on the second. I had a single drum first but got tired of the hassle of changing grits.

I use my 16/32 Performax for finish sanding after planing so I use mostly 120 & 150 grit. Only once in 3 years have I used anything courser and that was 100 grit.
You may need to consider the type of wood you are likely to run through it as the finer grits load up quickly on softer woods. Most of my work is domestic hardwood and exotics and I keep 120 grit on the machine. Don't forget that a good (non-paint) finish will still require ROS sanding and/or scraping as all the drum sanders leave scratches on the surface, so the courser grits need the most subsequent work. Personally, I never consider the surface off my drum sander as a finished surface no matter how fine the grit.
I have 28 rolls left.. I suspect I'vew worn out a good 15 rolls thus far.. switching a roll takes less time than changing planner blades does so I remove whatever and replace it with whatever grit I use next..(saving it if not worn out)
40 grit is the coarstest I use and 220 grit is the finest I use..
I have the 16/32 Performax, I put casters that bolted right through the legs, perfect fit and you don't widen the footprint. I recycle a lot of old lumber, so I run it through 40 grit first. Get them flat the go finer. I may run 80 to 200 linier ft. at a time. I also buy most lumber in the rough.I hate the rt. side paper lock device, for some reason its just a pain.A two drum sander would be nice.Ron in Peabody
I have been using 80 grit since I bought mine. When it comes out of the sander, a few quick passes with a low angle jack, then a smoother are all I need. I have ordered some blue zirconium 100 grit. Folks say it does not load up, and lasts longer.

Have you looked at the newest one?

I bought the standard model a number of years ago and would love to have the oscillating feature.

Yes, I have briefly coveted the Oscillating design. But it is more than 2X the price of the standard 16/32. Can't justify it in the budget considering 32" will meet 99% of my needs.Greg
