   Seems as though a bunch of people like the Shop Fox too. I'm leaning that way.

   Lancer:

   Take a look at the General (international) bench top mortiser.  It runs about $299, has a cast iron table, good solid hold down, and a hand crank adjustment to hold the workpiece in place.  The motor turns at 1750 rpm, so less chance of burning wood or overheating bit/chisel.  I have had this unit for about two months.  Have cut LOTS of 1/2" mortises in 8/4 oak with no problem.

   I used to have a cheap Delta knockoff.  It never did work right.  As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

   I have the Jet, which works well with a bit of tweaking. I probably would have gone for the Shop Fox, had it been available at the time. It sounds like a beefier machine than anything short of a Multico, for about the same price ($250?) as the Jet or Delta. Avoid the really junky models with spring returns instead of pneumatic cylinders. Spring for a good set of chisels and keep them razor sharp, you'll be in business.
