Well, I finally wore out my Makita 12″ portable planer after 12 years and 1000’s of BF. It was a great machine for this serious hobbyist. But facing 900 BF of 12-15″ clear red oak, I’m ready for a 15″ planer. So I am looking for any feedback on what brand to buy. I have noticed ads for Yorkcraft and Shop Fox as well as the more common ones, PM, General, Jet, Delta, Grizzly. Anyone have any firsthand experience with Yorkcraft or Shop Fox? With the WW Shows coming in a couple weeks I could use some input. Thanks for any comments.

The Shop Fox 15" with the spiral cutterhead. Really nice clean results, should be plenty of power for your up coming projects. I put it on a mobile base, since my shop is smaller than I would like and this gets rolled out when I need it. With the infeed and outfeed tables, they certainly take up more room than a portable 12" model, even if mounted on a stand.

Are you still happy with your Shop Fox 15" spiral knife planer?

I've got the new Dewalt (top rated in most reviews) absolutely beautiful cuts with great dust control, I have no experience with other brands/models so I can't compare but I think you'll find that most of the major reviews love this machine for its accuracy, cut and ease of use.
I purchased the 15" yorkcraft this year. If you're into a great fit and finish then this machine may not be for you. Owners manual is pretty bad too. That being said, the planer worked great right out of the crate (no tweaking was required), planer was packaged for shipment better than any machine i've purchased, and the customer service is great. When i bought mine they were having a deal on shipping , so that, along with the inexpensive price of the planer made it an easy choice. I'd buy it again in a minute. john
I've got a 15" Jet. It's o.k. Knive changes are easy, access to them takes a little time. Dust collection is average, lots of little pieces don't make it up, they come out. I'm looking to upgrade from it to an old american cast iron oliver or powermatic, so it'll be for sale soon. I've been upgrading all my tools in my shop to old american iron, night and day in quality.

There may be a dozen names on these machines but they are all coming out of probably no more than one or two plants in Asia, so there is probably no point to obsessing over the quality of construction with these planers. The motors, handles, paint, and bolt on accessories may be different, but the core machines will be more or less all the same. So choose the model you want based on price, special features, and reputation of the supplier.

Tag,
I too recently purchased a Yorkcraft 15". I have been very pleased with the performance. I've planed about 30m bf of hard maple and about 100 bf cherry thus far. Actually, the only complaint is how fact that sucker fills the DC container.
