Hey,
I’ve got two very dumb questions and one sensible one:
1) Can padding laquer be applied after danish oil?
2) Can paste wood filler be applied after danish oil?
3) Can Behren’s rockhard tabletop varnish be applied after danish oil?
As you can tell, I’m very new to woodworking, and would greatly appreciate any help you could offer. Thanks,
Fred

...just to give a more detailed picture, I've made a stool out of a burly cherry stump, to which I've applied two coats of watco danish oil, wet sanding the second coat with 400 grit--and I want to add gloss and protection without getting the artificial plastic look of poly...what should I do? Also, the side of the stump/stool still is untouched, just the cambrium, which I'd like to protect as much as possible. Ideas?
Fred,
You know the old saying there are no dumb questions..........
You can apply padding lacquer over the oil but I would let it cure up for at least a week before doing so.
Paste wood filler can be used after oil but when wet sanding the oil into the surface it pretty much fillls the pores for you. Especially with a small pored wood like cherry.
If I were to paste fill a wood after danish oil; I would use the oil sparingly, just enough to get it to color the wood. When dry, I would then brush a coat of shellac to isolate it. SealCoat is blonde shellac and works very well for this. One coat will suffice. Give it a light sanding and then proceed with your paste filler. The barrier of shellac will keep any color ( if tinted) from coloring (staining) the wood
Behlens varnish can be applied over the oil. I would err on the side of caution and give it a couple of days to dry before varnishing.

Merry Christmas.
