What’s going on with white oak supply?
Anyone else out there having trouble finding decent white oak that’s not quartersawn? The last two times I’ve gone to my hardwood supplier I’ve found one board that fit the bill! Just looking for 4/4 x 6″ reasonably straight boards.

Down here in Portland, OR I can find it at my local supplier.
It's the revival of Mission/Arts and Crafts furniture, which is generally quarter sawn. You got an ammonia fuming tent too, right?
It seems like the no. 1 species for pallet wood around here, FG, though ash is starting to give it a run for the money (maybe due to the emerald ash borer?) I like pallet wood for small projects because it is free. Ha! Beat that price, frenchy!
ED,
free? well you may have a point if you don't want any wood longer than 42 inches or thicker than 1 inch.. plus it usually has a lot of dirt and grime rubbed in so your planner blades take a beating.. That plus no board seems wider than about 4/5 inches or so..

There's plenty of it in the midwest. Every direction I look out my windows, it's oak, maple, and cherry. I just sold 700 bf of it here about 3 months ago. All the local mills around here have plenty. You should consider banding with some of your locals, and splitting a good shipment.
Jeff
Where are you in the midwest? I'm in St. Louis and always on the prowl for good wood supplies/suppliers.Thanks,
Michael

I'm northwest of Chicago about an hour. I'm not a supplier. I mill my own logs for building furniture, mainly because I can control the quality, and I never have a problem bookmatching, or matching color, etc...
Most of my projects are on the larger side, and it's hard to color match in quantity unless it's all from the same tree.
The white oak I had was sitting around taking up space for a long time, so I launched it.
Here's a shot of a cherry tree that's been air drying for about a year now.
Regards,
Jeff
Jeff, how's the shop coming along? Did you use the paneling?
P.S...I'll be at Wrigley on May 25th v. Astros.
George
P.S.S...Do you sell any of that beautiful cherry?
Georgie
How's it going. The shop is coming along. I've been so busy, I actually bought a large stack of maple at Owl, and it's in the corner of the shop. I haven't had time to put it up yet. They gave me an extra 15% off because of the volume. One of these days when I get it up, I'll post some pics. I'm backed up big time, which I guess is a good thing!
I haven't been to a Cubs game yet, they're pizzin me off something fierce!
Talk at ya soon.
Jeff
I haven't been to a Cubs game yet..
Use some of that maple to make em' a good ball bat! Or a hand shield to knock down them fly balls from the other teams!
Will
I'm a season's ticket holder. I haven't been to a game yet, because I'm pissed at them, and I went to too many last year, and spent more time at Wrigley than in my shop ($$$). Then, they lose 10 straight to blow it at the end.
AHHHHHHHH! Don't get me started!
Jeff
AHHHHHHHH! Don't get me started!
BUT YA still a FAN I'll Bet! Geeee we Chicago folks and the Cubs..
How about them White Socks!
Could be worse. They could be the Reds!
Nice cherry log. I need a few of those too. :)Thanks for the info.Michael
That log is going to be a dining room table, chairs, china cabinet, and buffet very, very, soon!
Whatever is left over will become a tool cabinet in my shop. I've been wanting to build one of those awesome ones for a while, and I'm finally gonna do it.

Can I be your 'friend'?
Have you tried East Perry Lumber Company just south of you along the river near Perryville? A large hardwood mill. They're on the net.Never serious, but always right.
Never tried them...but I'll sure put it on my list. Thanks,
Michael
Someone spread the rumer that QS is worth more. I hope the sawyer is making more.
Most commercil mills saw through and through and must produce a lot of flat sawn lumber.
Someone spread the rumor that QS is worth more..
Somewhat stumped here.. I always thought ya got less wood cutting QS so should be much more expensive??
I missing something?
Here in the Florida panhandle I can't find quartersawn. We don't have many vendors to begin with, but they have a very poor selection. It's very disappointing.
Forest Girl,
white oak is just about as common as dirt, quarter sawn only adds a modest cost to the price of it and if you buy mill run it's included free (only a few center boards are truely quarter sawn) Start buyng from sawmills! Johnson logging will sell you all you want at 80 cents a bd.ft. Widths up to 20 inches, lengths to 20 feet.. 507-263-5711
white oak is just about as common as dirt AND as about priceless!
But I like ASH better...
QS in PDX has only a small price premium over flat-sawn, and is still alot cheaper than some other species (have you priced cherry around here recently?). So I just go with QS; any particular reason you want flat-sawn?
Hi Barry. Yep, cherry's pretty expensive. I'm making small display pieces from this lumber and trying to keep the materials cost down as much as possible. Only buying a few boards at a time right now, and the plain sawn is $2.95/BF. QS is $4.25 That buck.thirty-five makes a difference.
Late Bulletin! Hah! I just called them, turns out I picked the worst day of the year to go in yesterday. They're doing yearly inventory this week, closed on Saturday even, and had counted the PSWO, bundled it and put it "in the back." If I had just asked....... Oh well.

Skid lumber OK if ya got a LASAR trimmer that cuts threw that metal!
Nope, that fails the time-per-unit test. This is supposed to turn into a production line for me, and things have to be efficient!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Yep, cherry's pretty expensive.
Of course, I'm waiting for a post now from Frenchy about how he gets 20" wide, no-sapwood unsteamed cherry for ~50 cents a BF! Or something to that effect.
Oh, yeah, forgot about that possibility! Strangely silent though ;-)forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)

Geee I have died and went to Heaven!
Forrest...
not quartersawn?... AS IF THAT WAS A PROBLEM!
I'd say Supply and Demand...

Come to Central Texas. There is a local supplier to the furniture industry who has 10's of thousands of board feet of the stuff. He also retails as well.
