Greetings all;
I am a new wood lathe turner and having great luck I found some heavy hard wood to turn on the lathe.
the first indicator was the electric chain saw blade barely was able to make 4 diameter cuts in a wet 16 inch log. I need a new blade..now .possiably a new saw! Plus I was tired after the cut!
Roughing out the blanks is something else. Green, fresh cuts are likely to be an easy turn, a walk in the park, a day at the beach, an e ticket at Disney world. Right?
Well this mother is a challenge, hard is not the word for it. It doesn’t give billowing chips; what it does give up is more like sawdust, and the tools are sharp!
I am guessing it is Hickory. It has a bark like Cherry, and an interior like oak, It is a challenge. I got it on the main road of Columbia CT where the town was cutting down trees. It was heavy.
What was it?
to make this simple I have not included any pictures!
Fire away!

Black locust is a pain in the butt to turn, wet or dry. Could be that.

Got it roadside in CT? I'm thinking it's a chunk from a "Frankenpine".
Evil & Hard? I think I know this one, I just can't seem to think of the name. It seems like it starts with a W and is a Bush. ha ha
Are you a political speech writer by chance?
W?
Hmmmm I don't know - but it is white. I think that species does come from Connecticut.Jim
Aw, my family used to have a small cottage on Columbia Lake - you're bringing back memories.Anyway, I might vote for Hornbeam, or Ironwood as I called it. It's definitely very hard and light in color. Usually doesn't grow very large in diameter.
I'm about a mile from Columbia Lake............The Lake is gorgeous now: the leaves are bright fire reds, and oranges in full color spectrum, and the lake is clear, so clear you can see the bottom at a depth of seven feet; the summer homes are quiet. It is very tranquil. Perhaps just as a child hood memory...Best,
Jim
You're killing me! I live in Sacramento now, but have fond memories of childhood summers on the lake. I never did the win the Sunday Sunfish sailboat race, darn it!Well, if you ever figure out that wood, I'd be curious what you have.
I know.Jim
but it is white. I think that species does come from Connecticut. LOL and then some!
