Why don’t furniture woodworking projects have more backs or undersides. It seems like I always scratch, chisel, or dent, or rout the wrong spot. I think, “oh that’s okay, I’ll just use that on the back or bottom.” Of course there’s always something already wrong with that side, too much sap wood, funky grain pattern, knot hole, or another gouge!

I'm pretty sure the tradition of having the marking lines on hand cut dovetails started out as... oh crap! scribe lines. Now it's called character and artistic tradition.
