Hi,
I have wanted a wet grinder for a long time but just couldn’t justify the (what I consider) extremely high prices. I just took advantage of WoodCrafts close-out on their Woodriver (model 144846, $59.99) along with the 400 grit wheel and the jointer/planer jig. If anyone is interested, the sale is still on along with free shipping for orders over $75. Also, go to Google and look up Woodcraft Coupon Codes. You can get an additional $10 off. My total cost was just under $100.
Now. I know that this is not a highly rated tool. The standard jig/guide that comes with it is trash. I haven’t had a chance to use the jointer/planer jig yet. However, I made a small table about the height of and level with the grinding wheel and use my General (model 809) honing guide for chisels, plane blades, etc. The wheels of the guide ride on the table. With this the system works great. For the money, I think it is a great buy as long as you are willing to spend some time making or adapting your own jigs/guides. If I remember correctly, this is essentially what a woodworking magazine (Wood or Fine Woodworking. Can’t remember which) review reported a few years back.
I have a question about the 400 grit stone. I suspect that when I started working with it I probably didn’t get it wet enough (not used to using water stones) and it is pretty clogged up. It will hardly cut. What is the best way to clean it so it will cut again. Do I need to somehow grind the surface down to get to fresh cutting material?
Thanks,
Bill

I had one several years back. I threw it into the trash. A green looking thing as I recall.
I don't think you did anything wrong. Just the stone or the tool? I have no idea which.
I will say however, it was VERY nice for grinding a secondary edge on my chisels.
I could get a really nice sharp edge. OK, so I never use a 3000 water stone on any tool I cut with. It was great for a 'quick' refresh of the edge and get back to work.
My opinion only. Most opinions differ from mine! I'm OK with that.
