Most of my projects are in cherry, finished with natural Watco Danish oil. The oil finish seems to dry out a bit and needs to be revitalized with a new coat every few years. But I’d like to try putting a coat of wax on top of the Danish oil for extra luster. If I did, would I have to undertake a laborious process of stripping the wax before recoating with Watco, or does wax make recoating unnecessary? Thanks, Ken Rosenberg in Arlington, VA

Watco makes a "Rejuvenating Oil" that seems to be just mineral spirits and a very small amount of resin. Because mineral spirits is a solvent for wax, when you apply it, it dissolves the wax and when you wipe down the furniture, all the old wax and gunk comes right off. When the mineral spirits evaporates, you are left with a renewed oil finish. So, you end up removing the old wax and renewing the finish all in one shot.
Also, the wax that is already on the surface is dissolved when you apply a new coat of wax. If you apply wax, immediately wipe it somewhat with a clean cloth then let is haze, you will have removed almost all the gunk with the first wipe and be left with a renewed wax finish.
I have about six or so pieces I made in the early 70's using walnut with a Watco finish. I apply a paste wax every six months or so and use the Rejuvenating Oil every 4-5 years. Stuff looks like new. Once, when I ran out of the Rejuvenating Oil just before Xmas, I used just a 50/50 thinned with MS standard Watco and it worked the same as the Rejuvenating Oil.
