Peter,
I’m building a matching set of walnut chest of drawers. I’m about 90% pleased with the color of the wood (I’ve been able to eliminate or hide the sapwood).
What do you think of use Watco Walnut finish to warm the whole piece up a bit and if using Watco doesn’t send you through the roof, what top coat would you suggest?
Thanks,
George

Hi George,
Watco is without question a very simple thing to do. You have to understand that it provides minimal protection at the best.
It will not build a surface film the way other varnishes will. Another wipe on finish such as Waterlox original will give you a soft lustre with a little more of a surface coating. It is also very easy to apply.
I always encourage samples of whatever finish you are thinking of using. I know the problem with that is you need to buy a variety of products to try out. Unfortunately the finish companies don't sell small samples to experiment with.
If you already have some watco do a good size sample with as many coats as you were thinking of applying on the walnut.
If you don't mind adding another type to your inventory, try some waterlox done the same way and you'll have a great comparison.
Of course there is always shellac too. A different coating to be sure and a whole different look.
BTW, the "send you through the roof" analogy gave me a good chuckle.
Let me know what you decide on.
Peter
