I made a walnut top for our kitchen island and can’t make up my mind on a finish for it. It won’t be used for cutting on directly but will be used for general food prep. The kids will also be doing homework and projects on it. I was going to do an oil finish but read somewhere not to get vinegar on it or it will warp. First thing I thought of was Easter and egg coloring, so now not sure what to do. My other option is poly I guess. I have over thought this now can’t make my mind up. Some advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Robby,
That island will take a beating. The best finish for a kitchen "table" situation is Behlen's Rock Hard varnish. It's name implies what you can expect in terms of durability. It has a slight amber hue which will benefit the walnut. Follow the instructions on the can. This finish can be leveled and rubbed out to any degree of gloss from a soft satin to high gloss.
