Hello All,
Here is the scenario-
Wall hung bookcase using a french cleat and a ledge board to sit it on. Dimensions are 48″ heigh, 32″ wide, 12″ deep. Gonna use all dados for fixed shelves and box construction. Face frame will be applied to tie 3 units together.
I really want to load these, which leads me to the question?
Should I install screws through side and back into shelves for extra ridgidity. And if so, what screw type is best for 3/4 ply w soft core. Ive heard confirmat used around this site?
Thanks Joe P

Hi Joe ,
So if I understand you are going to tie 3 units together and each unit is 32 " wide , one face frame for the 3 boxes , right ?
With the dadoed in shelves to the sides and a back and a ff the sides will not need screws , they will be pretty much trapped , in a good way .
With the fixed shelves using some form of fastener through the back into the shelves will prevent most of the sagging of the shelves . The majority of cabinets like this typically use 1/4" thick backs , if that is the case staples get used often for this application.
If your back will be thicker you could use screws without the risk of running them through the back . A basic rule of thumb for what it is worth is , whatever thickness the screw is going through should be the minimum purchase into the shelf in this case , example 3/4" back I would use 1 1/2" screws .
If your back is thick enough you could also dado the shelves into the back.
hope this helps dusty
First, run your planned sizes and species through http://www.sagulator.com . Its a web site that will calculate shelf sag based on material dimensions.
Next, think about pocket screws.l And know that if your shelves will be truly loaded, then the pockets can be hidden effectively by the load.
