I posted the following message 18th April 2006, can anyone help advise what software will enable me to download an play FWW videos. Living in the Bush in Australia I have only a 56k dialup modem telephone connection to the Web. Anyone know what software I can use to download the videos from Finewoodworking so that I can play them in real time after the hour or so download time. Using the Realtime software the videos only display at the download rate, i.e. if it takes an hour to download it will take an hour to play.

The problem is not limited to the Outback! I live just outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan, an hour from Detroit and can only access dial-up services. I offer you my heartfelt condolences as the world passes us by.
Jerry
Can you get Cellular? They are doing great things with cellular modems. I don't know how well you get service, but it is a possibility. Another alternative is a satellite option like direct way. While these are pricier than broad band, it is doable.
Thanks for the ideas. Satellite downlink is a possibility, however I was saving the money to buy tools. I was looking for a piece of software that works like SnagIt does when it captures a video, except that it captures only new frames. Maybe I'm hoping for too much and I'll have to forgo some tools for a satellite dish.
Hang in there man!
Condolences appreciated. It's autumn here now, last night was the first frost and boy! is my workshop cold! Thanks for the reply.
For a U.S. solution, I got these guys and have been reasonably satisfied. The latency is a little noticable on web browsing, but it works great on streaming video: http://www.wildblue.com
Thanks for the reference. Wild Blue looks similar to the system (Telstra) available here in Australia. My neighbours, who presumably don't save to buy tools, use it to enable their children to mind blast themselves into oblivion. Which of course is what I want my tools(toys) for. Also I must admit that the possibility of watching FWW's how-to videos promises to offer me endless escape potential.
Thanks for the info on Wildblue. I was all drool and lust as I read the material. Then I came to the section where I was to enter my Zip Code to locate a dealer - "you are in one of the VERY FEW Zip Code areas which our satellite does not cover".So much for drool and lust. I registered so they can let me know when the Detroit area is covered.Does anyone know about availability of sewrvice by DirectTV? We have that service but I can't get any info on Broadband service.Jerry
Ouch. I understand the demand in the Michigan area has far outstripped their expectations, so they've sold out that transponder. They are supposed to launch andother satellite toward the end of the year. See http://www.wildblue.cc for more info.
The DirecTV-affliated service used to be called DirecWay; I think it is called HughsNet now.
Thanks. I'll check out Hughes.Jerry
GoTo http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/ or

should get you going.
Wow! They both look like they are exactly what I am looking for, I'll give them a try. I did my doctorate in computer science in 1976, after that I got sick of computers and let the computing world go by me safe in the knowledge that if I ever needed help there would be many experts around. Seems like you are one of them. Many thanks for your help.
Living in the Bush in Australia !!
I thought you would be spending you time looking for WATER!
Just funnin' ya..
I was in Australia a few times. Folks asked where I'd like to go.. I said the 'Bush' and look around.. They said, We thought you bloks' were smart up there?
Your'e right, water's usually a real problem. This last few months hasn't been too bad though. I've got plenty of bore(well) water but its chock full of minerals so its only good for firefighting, which is the other real concern. Fire is really terrifying, guess youv'e experienced that in the U.S. recently. As long as there's enough water to keep my whetstones and my whistle wet there's no worry. Beer helps with the whistle.
have you tried Quicktime (available as a free download from Apple)... files tend to be a bit smaller, quality's generally better than Real format...
can't think of a download acclerator that'd help, but a download manager might help some (it did back when I was on dial-up)..

Stay safe....Have fun
Thanks for the suggestion. I use PC and thought Apple software was incompatible, I will give it a try.
