Hey Alan,
What do you consider the very best dual 10″ or 12″ slide compound saw? I’m currently using the Hitachi 10″ but the blade continues to run when the trigger is released…and I use it with 8th graders so it’s a safety issue. I think we need a new one please advise. M Cleary [email protected]

Perhaps I can help you out with this, I'm the shop manager for Fine Woodworking. Sorry it took so long to get this answered.
First of all, if the Hitachi used to have a functioning blade brake, the fix for the loss of braking is almost always to replace the motor's brushes which have been worn down too far to make good contact. This is a cheap and easy fix.
That said, even the best blade brakes still allow the blade to spin for a second or two after the switch is released, I would much more focus on a good guard and proper technique as the primary way to keep the kids safe around the saw.
If you could tell me what types of projects the saw is likely to be used for, I could better advise you about which saws to consider. It seems that a 12 inch slider is an awfully large saw for kids to handle.
