hey,
anybody have any ideas on filling tear out in santos rosewood on a table top.
the table is yet to be finished. the top is to have a medium dark stain, so maybe a filler could be hidden with proper color tint.
any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tint epoxy putty to base color, spread it flush with a credit card. After it's dry, draw in grain lines with a fine line black sharpie pen. Apply seal of shellac and go for you finish.
You can use almost any oil base color for tining the epoxy. Mohawk sells a good epoxy putty.
The time to apply the filler is after the material has been stained and a first coat of the top coat applied. Then you can get a very good color match as a base, and add any necessary graining or texture. Differences in sheen can be hidden by the final top coat or two, but not differences in color.
Sort of like Steve recommended. But if the tearout has little bits of end grain exposed, the stain will be absorbed more there resulting in dark spots exactly where you don't want attention. So you might want to seal those spots first to minimize absorption. As always, do some test panels complete with tearout.
